Rehabilitation-Focused Psychological Therapy Following Accident, Injury, or Trauma

Rehabilitation-Focused Psychological Therapy Following Accident, Injury, or Trauma

Psychological difficulties following an accident or injury are often complex, and may not always be immediately recognised.

After a road traffic accident, workplace injury, medical event, or physical assault, people may find that something in their experience has shifted. This can include anxiety, intrusive memories, changes in mood, reduced confidence, or a sense that the world feels less predictable or safe than it once did.

In some cases, these responses settle with time. In others, they persist, interfere with daily life, or become more pronounced.

Where this occurs, psychological therapy can form an important part of rehabilitation.

Psychological Rehabilitation After Injury

Rehabilitation-focused psychological therapy aims to support recovery following an accident or injury, not only at the level of symptoms, but at the level of functioning and overall wellbeing.

This may include:

  • Reducing trauma-related symptoms such as anxiety, flashbacks, or avoidance
  • Supporting adjustment to physical injury or changes in capacity
  • Addressing fear associated with returning to driving, work, or daily activities
  • Working with the psychological impact of pain, medical treatment, or prolonged recovery
  • Supporting return to work, study, or social functioning

The aim is not only symptom reduction, but a gradual restoration of a sense of stability, continuity, and confidence in everyday life.

Approach to Treatment

I offer an integrative approach to psychological rehabilitation, drawing on:

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) for trauma and distressing memories
  • Psychodynamic and humanistic psychotherapy to explore the broader psychological impact of the event
  • CBT-informed approaches to address anxiety, avoidance, and behavioural patterns
  • ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) to support adjustment, values-based action, and psychological flexibility

The approach is tailored to the individual, the nature of the injury or trauma, and the stage of recovery. In some cases, work may be relatively focused and time-limited. In others, a more gradual and integrative approach is required.

Working Within a Medico-Legal Context

I regularly work with solicitors, insurers, and case managers in the context of personal injury and trauma-related cases.

This may involve:

  • Providing rehabilitation-focused psychological therapy following an accident or injury
  • Working as part of a broader rehabilitation plan
  • Offering structured treatment with clear goals and regular review
  • Liaising, where appropriate and with consent, with legal or medical professionals involved in the case

I am familiar with the requirements of working within a medico-legal framework, including the need for clarity, appropriate boundaries, and careful documentation of treatment.

I am happy to receive referrals from solicitors and to discuss the suitability of psychological intervention at different stages of a case.

Who This May Be For

Rehabilitation-focused therapy may be helpful following:

  • Road traffic accidents
  • Workplace injuries
  • Physical assault or traumatic incidents
  • Medical trauma or adverse medical experiences
  • Injury-related loss of confidence, independence, or functioning

It may also be appropriate where symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, or low mood have developed following an injury or distressing event.

Location and Format

Sessions are available in person in the Harley Street Medical District, London, or online where appropriate.

The format and frequency of sessions are agreed in advance, depending on clinical need and the context of the referral.
