IN THE REGION OF TRAUMA, ALL DURATION OR STRETCHING ALONG COLLAPSES; PAST BECOMES PRESENT, AND FUTURE LOSES ALL MEANING OTHER THAN ENDLESS REPETITION.

EMDR Therapy in London and Online

Trauma, PTSD, and Complex Trauma Treatment with Dr Comfort Shields

I offer EMDR therapy in London and online for adults experiencing the effects of trauma, including PTSD, complex PTSD, childhood trauma, and other trauma-related difficulties.

EMDR is most useful where experiences continue to feel present in the mind or body—where something has not settled, even with time or understanding.

My work is grounded in clinical psychology, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and trauma-focused treatment. EMDR is offered as part of a carefully considered process, with attention to pacing, stability, and the specific nature of the trauma.

What Is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that helps the brain process experiences that have remained unresolved.

Traumatic or overwhelming events are not always integrated in the way ordinary memories are. They can remain emotionally immediate, activated by reminders, or experienced as if they are happening in the present.

EMDR works by allowing the brain to revisit these experiences in a structured way, using bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or auditory tones), so that they can be processed and gradually lose their intensity.

The aim is not to remove memory, but to change its impact.

Who EMDR May Help

EMDR may be appropriate for adults experiencing the effects of:

  • Childhood abuse or neglect
  • Sexual assault or violence
  • Domestic abuse and coercive control
  • Road traffic accidents or physical injury
  • Medical trauma
  • Traumatic grief
  • Repeated or relational trauma

It may also be helpful in some cases for:

  • Panic and anxiety
  • Phobias
  • Trauma-related shame or avoidance

Where there is significant dissociation or complex developmental trauma, EMDR often requires more preparation and a slower pace. It is not simply a technique applied quickly, but a process that needs to be adapted to the individual.

How I Offer EMDR

EMDR is offered in structured blocks of sessions rather than on an open-ended basis. This allows for continuity, containment, and a clear therapeutic frame.

There are two formats:

  • 3-session EMDR intensive: suitable for clearly defined, single-incident trauma
  • 6-session EMDR block: for more complex or longstanding trauma

In both cases, sessions are 90 minutes. The work typically includes assessment, preparation, processing, and review.

Not all difficulties are suited to a brief EMDR approach. Where the presentation is more complex, EMDR may form part of a longer course of psychotherapy rather than a standalone intervention.

What EMDR Sessions Involve

EMDR is a structured process. Sessions usually include:

  • Assessment of your history, symptoms, and goals
  • Preparation and stabilisation
  • Identification of key memories, triggers, and beliefs
  • Processing using bilateral stimulation
  • Ongoing review and integration

The work is collaborative and paced carefully. It should not feel overwhelming or rushed.

EMDR in London and Online

I offer EMDR therapy in person in the Harley Street area and online EMDR therapy for clients across the UK and internationally.

Online EMDR can be effective where appropriate, though suitability is considered on an individual basis.

EMDR Fees

  • 3-session EMDR intensive (single-incident trauma): £810
  • 6-session EMDR block: £1,350

EMDR is offered in blocks only. All blocks are payable in advance, strictly non-refundable, and must be used within six months.

This reflects the allocation of extended session time and the need for continuity in trauma processing work.

Suitability

EMDR is not appropriate in every situation. Where there is significant instability, dissociation, or complexity, additional preparation or a different therapeutic approach may be needed.

Suitability is considered carefully in an initial consultation.
